Earthquakes
1. How do earthquakes start?
Earthquakes most commonly start by at the boundries of tectonic plates where stresses accumulate in the earths crust over time, causing energy to be stored in the form of elastic strain (like that in a compressed spring).
Ultimately this strengh will exceed the sheer strength of the crust in the fault or boundry zone causing a sudden brittle failure or rupture.
This in turn causes movement and a sudden release of the stored elastic strain energy in the form of seismic waves (as well as heat) causing a earthquake.
5. How long do they go for?
They go for a few seconds but the maximum time for a appropriate earthquake is about around 1&1/2 minutes, and it may seem small but having an earthquake for around 1&1/2 minutes could cause brutal damage to the surroundings of the earthquake.
